Gum Disease and Bleeding Gums

Dentist in Sutton explains early warning signs for Gum Disease, Gingivitis and Periodontitis:

Friday 22nd February 2019

I would like to start a discussion with you about gum disease, and the importance of catching it early! This blog will explain the early stages of Periodontal Disease, and any feedback is always welcome.

Gum disease isn't just something that happens later in life, more than half of teenagers have some form of gum disease. I want to increase the awareness of gum disease. Through me, it will benefit your own oral health, and then you can pass this information on to your loved ones to benefit them.

Today I want to talk about the main types of gum disease.

The early stage of gum disease is called "gingivitis", the first warning signs, which you should look out for, are:

Reddish-blue patches at the gum margins

Red, swollen gums

Bleeding gums

Unpleasant tastes and odours in the mouth or bad breath

Sensitivity of some of the teeth to cold and hot

Gum recession

Tooth moving or drifting apart

Please give us a call if you are concerned about any of the above.

Periodontitis is a more advanced form of gum disease and occurs when plaque destroys the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. When the gum tissue and bone are destroyed, the tooth loses its support and becomes loose in its socket. At this stage, teeth may fall out or need to be removed.

It is possible to have gum disease without showing any symptoms, which is why, it is important to visit your dentist regularly for check-ups.

I hope this helps, and if there are any questions, please give us a call.

Best wishes
